Shopping on Royal Street – Memories and stories of the past

It goes without saying the French Quarter is a bustling, thriving section of New Orleans.  A great place for eating, shopping and site-seeing, one can easily spend an entire day taking in all the area has to offer.  But, if you are in the market for antiques look no further than Royal Street!

There are several specialty antique shops offering incredibly unique pieces of history.  Part of the beauty of antique shopping is that there is a story behind every piece, memories from another time and place.  The friendly owners and managers of the Royal Street shops are more than happy to answer customers’ questions about the antiques they sell and maybe even give a brief history of the items.

A few very popular shops on Royal Street are Harris Antiques, Royal Antiques, and Rothschild’s Antiques.  Each of these stores is unique, warm and employs people passionate about their line of work.  They are definitely worth checking out.

Harris Antiques, with four floors of 18th and 19th century European antiques, is located at 233 Royal St.  Owner, Arthur Harris, takes pride in his line of work, and shows it by his attention to detail.  Even the website, http://www.harrisantiques.com is more informative and detailed than any other yours truly ran across during research.  Customers can browse the shop’s inventory; research specific artists featured in the store and even educate themselves about art history.  For details about any items you may be interested in call (504)523-1605 or see the website for email options.

Another shop, possibly the largest in the area, is Royal Antiques, located at 309 Royal Street.  Again, some items can be viewed online at http://www.royalantiques.com and the friendly employees go out of their way to assist customers in any way possible.  Royal features 18th and 19th century English, French and Italian antiques, including furniture, lighting, art and various other accessories.  For more details or to inquire about specific items call (504)524-7033 or email them at royalant@bellsouth.net.

Finally, we get to Rothschild’s Antiques, with two locations: 321 and 241 Royal Street.  This shop also offers online shopping and friendly customer service.  Specializing in 18th, 19th and 20th century French and English antiques, Rothschild’s is a unique shop not to be overlooked.  Their website, http://www.rothschildsantiques.com shows their distinctive items, many of which are pieces of antique jewelry, silver and chandeliers.  For more details call (504)523-2281 or email them at rothschildsantiques@att.net.
