New Colognes Use Science to Tap

Into the Primal Power of Nature.

So, have you heard there are new colognes that can help you score more dates? It may sound like pure malarkey, but believe it or not, it’s true. There are some new pheromone-enhanced scents on the market that that may help lonely guys get a little more attention from the ladies.

For years scientists have speculated that human beings of both genders release sexual-enhancing pheromones, particularly when they perspire. A recent study conducted by the University of Chicago’s Division of Social Sciences and posted online at www.ewellnessreports.com has scientifically proven that this is not only true, but that the biochemical is very potent.

When men are aroused, they emit a pheromone called Di-Dehydroepiandrosterone. Women detect the chemical on a subconscious level, particularly when they are ovulating. During ovulation, a woman’s sense of smell is much more acute than usual, causing her to unconsciously home in on a man’s pheromonal secretions. It is also at this same point in her menstrual cycle that a woman emits higher levels of male-attracting pheromones.

Why is it then that it has taken modern scientists so many years to notice, and prove, this astounding effect? It seems pretty obvious that something natural is going on when you watch animal mating rites on The Discovery Channel. After all, you never see animals go through romantic and loving courtships. If there is any sort of courtship ritual at all, it generally involves something semi-violent, like the male beast roaring as loudly as possible or pounding upon his chest with clasped fists. Why is it any different for humans?

Well, apart from the fact that we consider ourselves more intelligent and sophisticated than the animals, (or so we think), there may be a very simple and straight-forward answer: Showers.

When we shower, we wash off all of our natural pheromone coatings. We then mask our natural scents with deodorants, colognes and scented soaps or aftershaves.

Media-savvy pharmaceutical companies may have found a way to tap into the attraction potency of pheromones such as Di-Dehydroepiandrosterone by including them in new colognes and perfumes.

The website, www.pheromonereviewsite.com, features an article by a person who has apparently tested the effectiveness of some of these products, and gives an in-depth review of each.

So, if you’re interested, check it out, and make your own call. Who knows, if these new scents truly work, some of you just might not go home alone tonight.

PGA Golfer, Boo Weekley Visits Alabama Small Town

PGA golfer Boo Weekley hosted a tournament in the small town of Brewton, Ala., recently.

Boo WeekleyWeekley, current resident of Jay, Fla., says that though he has plays on many famous courses, he still enjoys golfing in Brewton. “I love playing here. It’s a lovely course. The people at the club are very respectful. When I’m out on the course, they leave me alone, let me practice and do what I need to do.”

Despite the hoopla caused by his presence, Weekley courteously granted the following interview:

How many years have you been golfing and when did you begin?
“Thirteen-and-a-half, going on fourteen, is when I really got serious. I reckon I’ve been golfing about 20-odd years.”

Who were some of your golfing heroes?
“Ben Hogan. Would’ve loved to met the man. I would’ve loved to have met him now, now that I’m playing.”

The Photo is Courtesy of the Brewton Standard, and the photographer is Bruce Hixon, Sports writer.

What got you interested in golf?
“Mom and Dad. I’ve always loved sports and being outside.”

Who are some of your favorite PGA golfers that you have played alongside?
“VJ (Singh), Heath Slocum- I graduated high school with him; Bubba Watson, and Joe Duran.”

How does it feel knowing you’re on nationwide TV- does it ever make you nervous?
“Well, I wouldn’t say I’m nervous, but it’s a different kind of feeling, y’know? ‘Having the butterflies’ is what I reckon you call it.”

What are some of your favorite courses you’ve played?
“Hilton Head (South Carolina); Wachovia (Quail Hollow, Charlotte, N.C.); Bay Hill (Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Orlando, Fla.). I just like ‘em cuz they’re good golf courses.

Is it really different competing on a small-town golf course vs. the PGA Tour?
“No, not really. It’s a golf tournament. Whether I’m playing on a PGA tour, or playing here (at the Brewton Country Club), for two dollars, I’m in the same frame of mind. I’m playing to win.”

Are there any amateur golfers that you feel have professional potential?
“I haven’t played “around the house,” so much. I’ve been on the road so much, that I haven’t had the time to really play with any of the local boys.”

How much money do you normally win in professional tournaments?
“I don’t look at the money, just at where I finish. I’ve ended up being in the top 20 of the world, and that’s my goal.”

What are some of your other Sports Interests and Hobbies?
“Hunting and fishing”.

Where did you get the nickname “Boo”?
“Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo cartoons. I’ve had it since I was about three. It just kinda stuck.

Do you have any advice for young golfers who dream of playing in the PGA?
“Just be patient, y’know? You’ve gotta believe. If you don’t believe, you’ll never reach your goals.”

No more Gatorade in the Cooler?

A recent article found on ESPN.com mentions an interesting development in college football. In fact, it may cause football teams to have the coolers on their sideline filled not with water or Gatorade, but with a different form of re-hydrating supplement.

What is this mystery supplement? The answer is none other than plain old chocolate milk. That’s right, the University of Washington’s college football team, the Huskies, has added the chocolaty dairy product to their staple of supplements for their players.

Trent Greener, University of Washington’s director of sports performance, UW sports nutritionist, Emily Edison and Athletic Trainer Rob Scheidegger, decided to collaborate after discovering a recent study conducted by scientists at Indiana University, which was published in The International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism.

This study found no significant difference between athletes drinking a typical fluid-replacement drink like Gatorade, versus drinking chocolate milk after exercise.

This discovery, combined with the National Dairy Council bombarding Americans with advertisements touting the healthy benefits of milk, led Greener and crew to implement its usage in their team’s dietary regime.

During preseason practices the University of Washington’s sports staff is now requiring players to consume at least one small carton of fat-free chocolate milk. This may be done either right before or right after drinking Gatorade and while taking ice baths to cool their legs.

Thought not the most appetizing of mixtures, since Gatorade usually has fruit flavorings such as lemon, lime or orange; the young athletes aren’t complaining. Here’s what a few of them had to say:

“It tastes good to me, and hey, if it’s nutritious and helps my body, I’m all for it.”
- UW Wide Receiver Cody Ellis

“You just trust what the strength and conditioning coach say, you trust what the trainers say, you trust what our coaches say. They say it helps this, so it helps that, so we just do it. You don’t have to taste it, you just do it.”
UW Wide Receiver Marcel Reese.

When asked what the best thing about being a Husky was, center Juan Garcia said, “Tradition and chocolate milk.”

You have to wonder if the athletic staff and UI scientists have taken into consideration the fact that milk sours very quickly in the heat. Drinking sour milk has been known to make people vomit profusely. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see what the results are.

Introduction to Fly Fishing

Fly fishing was originally used to catch salmon and trout. Today the species caught with this type of fishing has more than quadrupled. You can fly fish in either salt or fresh water. The four basic parts you need to fly fish are a rod, a reel, a line, and a lure.

There are many different fly fishing rods ranging from 6 ft. to 15ft. though the common fly rod is 8-9 ft. long and saltwater rods are usually shorter than their freshwater counterparts. When selecting a reel, make sure you match the reel with the fly line you’re going to be using. If it doesn’t fit, it won’t work. Also, when you are fly fishing in saltwater be sure to buy a brass reel to prevent rusting.

Choosing the right fly lure can be tricky. The 5 main types are dry fly- imitates an insect floating on the water, wet fly- imitates an insect underwater, streamer fly- type of wet fly used to act like a wounded baitfish, terrestrial- tied as if a ground insect that has drowned, and nymph- wet fly growing out of its cocoon. The size of the artificial fly is what determines the number classification of fishing line needed. A fishing line’s number then determines the fly rod’s number.

Wading boots are essential for any fly fisherman. All wading boots should have a felt sole, as it provides extra traction. Also, make sure your boots provide ankle support, just in case your felt sole should slip, you don’t want a broken ankle.

Captain Basil Yelverton of Gulf Breeze Guide Services states, “Of all the types of fishing we do here, my personal favorite is fly fishing.  I was introduced to salt water fly fishing about fifteen years ago and have become addicted.  I'm not ashamed to admit it. I guess it is the challenge that turns me on.”

Sis Keisling of El Paso, Texas, communicates with a nice 7 pound black drum on April 1. I believe she has the fish hypnotized as it heads for the cooler.

Summer BBQ

Summertime is all about relaxing, kicking back, grabbing a cold drink, and of course, BBQs! Here's a few tips on how to throw a great BBQ and what to serve!

BBQ Attire:

You've got to be dressed right to truly enjoy a BBQ. This summer, keep it simple since the weather is incredibly hot:

  • T-shirts
    • Go plain or go wild.  Pick up that old t-shirt with the favorite saying and start conversations! Try and stay away from completely ragged shirts though guys. That old t-shirt that you've been using as an oil rag when working on the car is not "casual" or "comfortable".  It's just plain NO.

  • Shorts
    • No short-shorts here guys. Just some casual, comfortable jean or khaki shorts (although jeans are more conducive to wiping BBQ sauce on than khakis).

  • Flip-flops or sandals
    • Give the feet some air! But please, be sure your toenails are clean. Clip them down a little, it doesn't take long.

  • THE Apron
    • If you're the cook of the BBQ, it's standard practice to wear THE apron. The "Kiss the Cook" apron or the "Don't Mess With The Guy With Thongs" aprons. Something silly, something goofy, something that makes the fellow guys cringe a little on the inside, laugh on the outside, and silently thank the heavens they aren't the cook.

    • By the way, it's usually a big hit with the ladies

Now that you know what to wear, it's time to get the grill ready!

  • Cleaning a Caked-on grill
    • It's been months since you've last had a good BBQ and your grill is just a bit...messy. Here's some ways to clean it up so you're food doesn't stick

      • Take the grill and lay it on some of those old newspapers you've got lying around
      • Spray it with heavy-duty oven cleaner (go ahead and get it drenched!)
      • Let it sit for awhile...5 minutes is not awhile. We're talking 30 minutes to an hour
      • Scrub it with steel wool (use some elbow grease!)
      • Rinse VERY well
      • Repeat if you need too

  • Don't let you're food stick to the grill
    • Spray the grill with nonstick cooking spray (after you've cleaned it)

  • If you're using a charcoal grill, a few tips on how to start the fire
    • Stack charcoal into a cone shape
    • Pour lighter fluid over the charcoal cone, using more in the center than he edges
    • Let the fluid sit on the coals for about 30 seconds
    • With a long match light from the bottom on at least two sides
    • Let coals burn until all coals are white on the surface
    • Spread the coals evenly across the coal grate.
    • Close lid, wait 5 minutes and start cooking

Ok, now we're set to setting up the menu. Food choices are going to depend on you, your family, and the people you are inviting. Some classic ideas:

  • Chicken
  • Steaks
  • Hamburgers
  • Hotdogs
  • Ribs
  • Seafood (shrimp is a good one)

The entrees can be simple fare with some good ol' fashioned BBQ sauce on it, or you can get fancier and marinade. Too many options really for me to list here, just get out your Dad's family recipe and try it! (or do a Google search and get some other ideas)

For sides:

  • Broccoli
  • Corn on the cob
  • Potato salad
  • Egg salad
  • Chips

Again, the list is endless. You can go ala quick and easy with a bag of Lays chips or get more creative and serve up grilled asparagus or portobello mushrooms. A good place to see some ideas is here: BBQ Food!

All that's left is too call up your friends or neighbors and get the show on the road. If there will be children, have some games for them. A slip-and-slide, if you don't own a pool, or twister are some examples. If it's all adults, go ahead and have some varieties of drinks on hand (alcoholic and non). Then kick back, enjoy the company, grill up so good eats and enjoy the summer!
